Complicated Shadows

( 2015 – Present )

The imagery of this series was inspired by walks in the woods, where I began to notice how at certain times of day the trees filtered the sun to create interlocking networks of light and shadow.  Each painting builds a structure out of different numbers of “trees,” with each point containing 24 color or tone-based divisions, analogous to the hours in each day.  As the work progressed I discovered my series title in the Elvis Costello song “Complicated Shadows,” and began to think outside of the specificity of landscape, and envision how these intersecting nodes could also suggest human or other time-based interactions.
