Me, Myself and Others
( 1990s )
The intersection between written communication and visual expression has been a recurrent theme in my art. After working with book-long texts, I spent a 6-month residency in Paris, and my emphasis shifted to more contemporary authors. Text became my “image” in abstract paintings stimulated by my own texts and writers as diverse as Paul Auster, Simon Schama, Roland Barthes, and Roberto Calasso. In other paintings the Braille text is scaled up and juxtaposed with fingerprint patterns to emphasize the perceptual tension between looking and touching, comprehension and intuition.
